Theatre enthusiasts are in for a poignant and stirring theatrical experience as Theatre New Brunswick’s celebrated production of Bluebirds by Vern Thiessen lands at Eastern Front Theatre. This powerful play, directed by Natasha MacLellan, will grace the stage from October 24th to October 26th at the Alderney Landing Theatre, showcasing the indomitable spirit of women during the Great War.
Set against the backdrop of Étaples, France, in 1918, Bluebirds follows the lives of three courageous nurses - Christy, Maggie, and Bab - who have journeyed across oceans to provide care for wounded Canadian soldiers. As the horrors of war encroach upon their hospital, these remarkable women navigate the challenges of their environment with unwavering hope, forging deep bonds of friendship and discovering their own strength and influence in a world fraught with destruction.
The cast features the compelling talents of Kirsten Alter, Mélanie LeBlanc, and Sharisse LeBrun, who bring to life the emotional and transformative journey of the nurses with depth and grace. The production is enhanced by a team of visionary artists: costume designer Sherry Kinnear, projection designer Christian Ludwig Hansen, sound designer Stewart Legere, lighting designer Chris Saad, set designer Andrea Evans, stage manager Chelsea Dickie, and choreographer Sarah Power.
Bluebirds first captivated audiences during its inaugural run in the fall of 2022 at Theatre New Brunswick, where it garnered rave reviews and sold-out performances. Following its successful debut, the production embarked on a tour across New Brunswick, including stops at Campbellton’s Theatre Restigouche, Moncton’s Empress Theatre, Saint John’s Imperial Theatre, St. Andrews’ W. C. O'Neill Arena Theatre, Florenceville-Bristol’s Carleton North High School, and Sackville’s Motyer-Fancy Theatre. The play was also published by Playwrights Canada Press in 2022.
