2019/20 RBC Emerging Playwrights Program

Call for Submissions

The new EFT Playwrights Unit program will run host four playwrights annually and is open to all Atlantic Canadian playwrights. The goal of the EFT Playwrights Unit is threefold: to strengthen the artistic community, to provide a home theatre in the region for playwrights creating new Atlantic Canadian work and to create a bridge to ensure these new works make it to the stage at Eastern Front Theatre.

This 2018/2019 EFT Playwrights Unit will be comprised of two established playwrights and two emerging playwrights. An established playwright is defined as a playwright who has had at least one professional production of their work. An emerging playwright is defined as a playwright who has had their work appear in community theatre, Fringe Festival, other new work festivals or workshops, or has recently graduated from university program or theatre school.

The program and benefits:
  • The EFT Playwrights Unit will meet monthly with Eastern Front Theatre’s Artistic Producer. These sessions are casual check in sessions to foster community and combat a playwright’s sense of working in isolation.
  • Each playwright will be given a Home Delivery and partnered with a dramaturge through PARC who will check in with them over the course of the season to support the development of their work.
  • All playwrights in the EFT Playwrights Unit will have their work read as part of the annual EFT Stages Festival at Scotiabank Stage in Neptune Theatre.
  • Two playwrights annually from the EFT Playwrights Unit will receive a script development workshop with an Equity director and actors cast and arranged through Eastern Front Theatre and PARC.
  • All playwrights in the EFT Playwrights Unit will be offered complimentary participation in any professional development workshops offered by EFT throughout their tenure.
  • All playwrights chosen for the EFT Playwrights Unit must be members of PARC and Theatre Nova Scotia or can join upon acceptance into the program.
  • Playwrights must commit to attend all meetings throughout the year.
  • Out of town playwrights can attend monthly meetings virtually if necessary and EFT will work with them to cover travel and accommodation expenses to ensure their attendance in person for professional or script development workshops and the STAGES Festival.
  • Members of the EFT Playwrights Unit will receive a season pass to attend all shows and readings presented by Eastern Front Theatre during their time in residence.
  • Each playwright will be working on a chosen proposed piece with specific goals to accomplish over the tenure of their time in the EFT Playwrights Unit.
  • For any play workshopped by EFT during the playwright’s participation in the EFT Playwrights Unit, there is the potential to have it premiere at EFT within two seasons. EFT will be granted the right of first refusal for the premiere of that work for that time frame.
  •  A playwright has the potential to stay in the EFT Playwrights Unit for two consecutive seasons of the work requires continued support.
To apply:
  • Please send in your detailed CV (including address, email and phone details) or describe your training or work in your field to date.
  • The background and information on the play you propose to work on during the tenure of your time with the EFT Playwrights Unit.
  • An assessment of what you next steps you think the play requires.
  • Include a full draft or scenes that are currently completed.
