Love, Peace & Hairgrease: The Musical
AUDITIONS

July 11 + 12, 2022 at Alderney Landing Theatre

BOOK & LYRICS BY TARA L. TAYLOR

Composed by Tara Taylor, Mark Flowerdew and Charity Stairs
Music Arranged by Mark Flowerdew, Charity Stairs and Ross Unger
Eastern Front Theatre and Charles Taylor Theatre & Media Arts Association are holding auditions for the premiere of LOVE, PEACE & HAIRGREASE: THE MUSICAL, directed by Tara L. Taylor. Auditions will take place at Alderney Landing Theatre in Dartmouth/Punamu'kwati'jk on July 11th and 12th 2022. Rehearsals start September 26th, opening October 21st and closing October 30th 2022. Deadline to submit is July 4th 2022. Successful applicants will be sent sides and music tracks to prepare.

LOVE, PEACE & HAIRGREASE is a play about love and transformation that celebrates afro-textured hair, old and new thoughts and techniques. When Lauren Johnson takes over the legacy of her grandmothers’ salon and renames it Love, Piece and Hairgrease Hair Studio Plus (an Ebonics term meaning “bye”), the venture comes at a great cost. When they told her she couldn’t, she did it anyway. How does one find love and peace in the midst of hairgrease life storms? Say bye to fear, infidelity, old habits, relaxers, wigs, weaves, and stressed HAIR!

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
We encourage submissions across the gender spectrum; we invite you to submit for the roles you feel inclined to, regardless of character gender.

LAUREN JOHNSON, an accomplished and talented young Black woman who is bothered by tradition and wants to step out on her own. She has an activist spirit but is loyal to her family. She becomes a celebrity stylist and strives to educate about the natural hair movement.

GLADYS JOHNSON, talented, Black, set in her ways, bread and butter haircutter hair stylist. Lauren’s grandmother in her late 60s. She is tough as nails and stubborn.

GAYLE JOHNSON, beautiful older Black woman. Lauren’s mom, strong but sometimes unsure. Not always supportive publicly of her daughter although deep down she is proud of her. She can come off a little judgemental and stern.

JOEY WILLIS, natural, dreadlock wearing, humble, sincere, Black gentleman. Chivalry is not dead in this young man and he is sweet on Lauren. He has a strong faith and sense of himself. A hardworking man.

DUSTIN, Black business man, direct in going after what he wants, well dressed. Travels, works hard and likes to have a woman well maintained on his arm.

RADIO HOST, gender fluid Black youth, full of life, who is like that WOKE friend everyone confides in. They work for “Loc and Load” Radio station and are a hit in the industry. Flashy, with a sense of style.

LACY, gender fluid Black friend til the end, Lauren’s ride or die. Lacy is that friend who knows what's up and down, is an accomplished actor and loves gossip. Usually has the 401 on it all. Lacy keeps up their appearance and loves to get pampered at the beauty shops.
