PictureOriginal production stills from Consecrated Ground (1999, Ken Kam), Glace Bay Miners' Museum (1995, Thaddeus Holownia), as well as EFT founding AD, Mary Vingoe outside Alderney Landing Theatre (1999, Hannah Thomson).
To celebrate our move back to Alderney Landing, we've planned a “Homecoming” play-reading series, running March 12th and 13th. The series will revisit two of our most popular and important plays from our 28-year history: Glace Bay Miners’ Museum by Wendy Lill and Consecrated Ground by George Elroy Boyd.

Glace Bay Miners' Museum is a play based on the novel by Sheldon Currie, and was first co-produced by EFT and Ship's Company Theatre in 1995. Consecrated Ground was first produced by EFT in 1999. Both plays were nominated for Governor General Awards and are intimate Atlantic Canadian works that speak to the heart of what it is to live within a community - in particular, the two Nova Scotian communities of Glace Bay and Africville. Joining us to direct the series is Mary Vingoe, founding EFT AD and original director of Glace Bay Miners' Museum, plus David Woods, the original Reverend Miner of Consecrated Ground.

Tickets are on sale now for the series, which will include a short sneak peek of our Micro Digitals: a series of 60-second digital pieces created by local theatre artists during the pandemic. The performances will be recording live-to-tape to be released as audio dramas in future. There will be a post-show discussion with EFT founders Mary Vingoe and Gay Hauser, as well as playwright Wendy Lill and original performer Mary-Colin Chisholm following Glace Bay Miners’ Museum on March 12th. Cabaret-style seating will be sold in socially-distanced bubbles of two, three, or four and COVID procedures will be in effect for the performances. ASL Interpreters will be present for both performances. The show starts at 7:30pm.

COVID-19

Eastern Front Theatre recognizes that theatre creation is a deeply meaningful source of cultural work in our region and there are many individuals that have been without work or fulfillment for a year.

EFT respects that COVID-19 is a highly contagious and deadly virus. It is an illness that is highly transmittable by interpersonal proximity, surface transmission, and inadequate cleaning practices. We want to ensure our artists and our patrons are safe!

We understand the health and safety challenge posed by COVID-19 but believe we have the ability to foster a clean and healthy space for our public during the rehearsals and recordings in the Alderney Landing Theatre.

  • EFT officials will monitor public health recommendations as they are announced and will adjust plans accordingly. This may mean a lockdown of gatherings of any sort. As such, the Series will change direction to an online-only version.
  • Only Nova Scotian residents will be allowed to attend the Homecoming Series.
  • Tickets will be limited to 50 and sold in clusters of 1 to 4 through TicketPro. There is potential to add more tickets should EFT determine it is safe to do so.
  • Eastern Front Theatre staff, volunteers, contractors, and guests will be asked to abstain from attending if they are showing any signs or symptoms of illness, have travelled outside of province, or have come in contact with anyone from outside the province in the previous 14 days of March 8th, 2021.
  • All patrons, performers, technicians, staff, and volunteers will be required to wear a face mask.
  • In any situation where a person has not provided their own PPE equipment (mask, sanitizer), EFT will provide them free of charge in the form of a disposable surgical mask and extra hand sanitization throughout the property.
  • Alderney Landing Theatre will be thoroughly cleaned between each Reading and high-touch surfaces will be regularly cleaned.
  • EFT will complement Alderney Landing’s already rigorous cleaning and disinfection procedures. This includes surface contacts like tables and chairs, railings, etc. In addition, Alderney Landing completes a robust cleaning at the end of each day.
  • Upon entering, all public will be required to sign in - with name, phone number and signature.
  • Upon entering, all public will be reminded of the symptoms and requirements asked to enter the space - by acknowledging, on the sign-in sheet, all negative responses on the COVID-19 questionnaire.
  • The general public are asked to not linger, but rather make their way to their seat and remain there as much as possible.
  • Signage and floor markings exist throughout the space to ensure a safe flow of traffic.
  • Staff on site will remind attendees to adhere to the guidelines and maintain healthy distance whenever possible. Free masks and hand sanitizer will be on site.
  • At the end of the night, we will dismiss people by table/section as safely and efficiently as possible.

Eastern Front Theatre is looking forward to hosting you for many more events in the years to come - in our new home at Alderney Landing Theatre in Dartmouth/Punamu’kwati’jk, Nova Scotia.
