Join our Big Dreamers Campaign

A letter from Artistic Producer, Sam Rosenthal

Since I arrived in January 2018, I have been creating a vision for EFT and for this I’ve been labelled, for better or worse, a “Big Dreamer”. When I arrived, I wanted to create a group of playwrights that would actively contribute to our mainstage productions; I dreamed about a large scale immersive show that would happen on the waterfront; and I wished that Eastern Front Theatre would be better recognized for its high level of excellence in the community. I am thrilled to share with you that our Big Dreams have come to fruition.

Last month, we were nominated for a record breaking 17 Merritt Awards. Half-Cracked: The Legend of Sugar Mary by Mary-Colin Chisholm received seven nominations and Kamp by Jamie Bradley and GaRRy Williams received ten. We were proud to come away with 7 awards including best production for Kamp. These nominations and awards were strong endorsements from the Nova Scotia theatre community that we are headed in the right direction.

Our season launch happened March 31st at The Westin Nova Scotia. At the event, we announced our exciting 2019/20 line-up which includes two more Atlantic Canadian premieres, Tiny by Bruce Barton, in co-production with Zuppa Theatre and Boom Baby by Natalie Meisner, which is a show that comes directly from our Playwrights Unit. We also have high hopes of producing Great Harbour: An Immigrants Tale at Alexander Keiths Nova Scotia Brewery, an immersive show that features 19 actors and is set in 1925 Halifax.

The Playwrights Unit program “From Page to Stage” is thriving with three of the six playwrights currently working on plays that Eastern Front is considering for the future. It is foreseeable that Eastern Front will have a new work to premiere from this group each year, for years to come. We’ve even expanded the Unit to become a two-year program to better match the time needed for play development.

In keeping with our mandate to support quality work by Atlantic Canadians, we recently completed a run of the Atlantic Canadian premiere of Miss N Me by Catherine Banks which was directed by Laura Vingoe–Cram and ran here at the Scotiabank Stage from March 14 -24. The show featured 4 local actors lead by the dynamic Samantha Wilson and several local emerging designers.

As you can see, this has been a big year, and next year is going to be even bigger as we cultivate exciting new relationships that can further strengthen EFT’s reputation. I want to invite you to come and DREAM BIG with me. EFT can and will continue to be a vital part of this theatre community. With your support and my vision to DREAM BIG, we can achieve so much together. My next “Big Dream“ is to raise $10,000 for EFT and I know together we can achieve this goal.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT – DREAM BIG WITH US

I am searching for 200 Big Dreamers to donate $50.00 or more to EFT. For your $50 donation you will receive a tax receipt and be added to our “Wall of Big Dreamers”, which will recognize your very important donation. This wall will be featured in all our programs for the 2019/20 season, as well on our website. For those who donate $100 or more, you will receive a EFT Dreamers Pack which will include some EFT swag plus an invitation to an immersive radio play which will take place in a secret location in December of 2019.

We want to continue to share your stories, your rich history and culture. We need and want to employ your playwrights, artists, designers and crew. Help us to do that. Be a BIG DREAMER!

By joining our growing community of Big Dreamers, you help to protect and enliven Atlantic theatre culture.

Creating live theatre is a challenge. While we do source funding from our government partners, it is your personal contribution that demonstrates the level of community support and involvement which, in turn, ensures greater access to government funding.

For your convenience, we have a one-time OR monthly contribution option. If $50 or $100 is not affordable right now, please consider a monthly donation of $5 or $10 – that’s less than most people spend on coffee in a month, and you’ll be helping to contribute to Eastern Front’s artistic endeavors.

Your contribution can be done in any of the following ways:
• Click on either the Paypal or Canada Helps buttons below
• Downloading the file below, you can print, fill in and mail it back to us with a cheque or credit card information
• Donating in person at our offices at 1580 Barrington Street, Halifax

Actually, I’d love it if you come in person. I welcome the opportunity to meet you and hear what’s important to you as I steer this company into its next quarter century. We are open Monday through Friday, 10am - 2pm. The coffee is on. Join us, won’t you?
