Lauchie, Liza & Rory, set in a 1940’s coal mining town in Cape Breton, tells the heartwarming and hilarious story of Lauchie & Rory MacDonald, identical twins who couldn’t be more different. Lauchie is as shy and awkward as Rory is outgoing. When Lauchie finds the girl of his dreams it looks as if they will live happily ever after. And then Liza meets Rory. And a web of secrets and unspoken truths unfold under the same roof in this beautiful and heart-touching story.

Lauchie, Liza & Rory, first produced by Mulgrave Road in 2003, was highlighted at the 2004 Magnetic North Festival of Canadian Theatre and toured New Zealand to great acclaim. Part of the enduring charm of the piece is the theatrical magic that allows two actors, Christian Murray and Natasha MacLellan to create a whole village of characters, including Murray’s portrayal of the very different twin brothers. The play is directed by Mary-Colin Chisholm and written by acclaimed Nova Scotian writer, Sheldon Currie.

Playwright and former professor of English at St. Francis Xavier University, Sheldon Currie is best known for his published short stories, including The Glace Bay Miner’s Museum, which was adapted for the stage by Wendy Lill and premiered at Eastern Front Theatre in 1995. His stage adaptation of Lauchie, Liza & Rory won the 2004 Merritt Award for Best New Play.

One of the funniest, technically dazzling, smartly-acted pieces to drop on a Nova Scotia stage all year.
