The Passion of Adèle Hugo

November 6 – 20, 2011 – A World Premiere Musical

Eastern Front Theatre began its 19th Season with the World Premiere of The Passion of Adèle Hugo, book and lyrics by David Overton and music by Zachary Florence.  This musical drama based on the true story of Adèle Hugo was directed by Scott Burke and ran from November 6 – 20, 2011 at the Neptune Studio Theatre.

The Passion of Adèle Hugo is a new musical based on the outrageous but true story of Victor Hugo’s daughter’s doomed romance with a rakish British soldier.  Obsession drives her to relentlessly pursue him half way around the world until the force of her passion destroys them both.  Epic in scope, The Passion of Adèle Hugo features charged emotions, a virtuosic score, and a superb ensemble cast of some of the finest performers in Canada.

The Passion of Adèle Hugo is an original commissioned work and has been in development since 2008.  Artistic Producer Scott Burke and David Overton share a longstanding interest in ‘the mysterious Adèle H’ stretching back to Burke’s student days at Dalhousie University where Professor Overton taught playwriting.  Zachary Florence is a King’s College graduate who also worked with David and came to Burke’s attention through their collaborations.  The trio brings together the perspective and expertise of three generations of theatre creators to tell a story that bears special resonance to each.

The Passion of Adèle Hugo featured a superb ensemble cast including well known Haligonian Martin Burt, Toronto musical theatre phenom Sara Farb, Bruce Godfree returning to Halifax following two seasons at Stratford, the captivating Sabryn Rock making her Eastern Front Theatre debut; and Nova Scotia native Amanda Leblanc who recently released her first album.

The Artistic Team for The Passion of Adèle Hugo consisted of Director Scott Burke, Musical Director Lily Ling,  Costume Designer Adam MacKinnon, Lighting Designer Leigh Ann Vardy, Assistant Director Christopher Fowler and Stage Manager Heather Lewis.
